How you age is your choice, it’s not just luck. There are 3 steps to aging better. The sooner you start, the quicker the results. It does seem that some people age faster than others, biologically. Of course, chronologically that is not true. We have all seen friends and family members that never seem to age and yet we know people that once we learn their age, we are surprised at how young they are, chronologically. Why does this happen and can we slow our aging process down? The answer is yes and it happens based on how well we take care of our bodies. Movement is key. The old saying, “a body at rest, stay at rest,” is very true. It will also rust. Although we call it arthritis, it is rust all the same. Lack of movement and our diet contributes mightily to the amount of pain we suffer.

Understanding your body works the same way can give you the opportunity to age better. Yes, luck does play a small part, but it is very small. What you feed your body, how you treat your body, and how you relax your body are the keys to better longevity. Leave any one part out and the end may not be so great. Too many times I have seen people that work out nearly every day but eat horribly and are under tremendous stress. Their end of life may not be any better than the person that does virtually nothing. While exercise and lifestyle are important, the amount of stress and diet have been linked to nearly every major disease. Our society is living under a tremendous amount of stress every day and that is not sustainable long term, regardless of the medical breakthroughs. Change the Way You Eat

You can change your life by being conscious of what you eat. Learn to read labels. If you cannot pronounce a word on the label, it is probably not good for you.  Buy meats and vegetables from local farms. You will get food in season that is perfect for your body for that time of the year. Plus you will keep money in your local economy. If you cannot buy from a local farm, buy fresh vegetables and good meat. I don’t mean just organic, but meat that is raised without being grain-fed or use antibiotics.  Dairy products without hormones are best to eat and drink.  Increase the number of fruits and vegetables you eat with a little less meat.
Carbohydrates can be vegetables, bread, and pasta, or processed foods. There are 2 different types of carbs. Vegetables are fiber carbohydrates while everything else is grain carbohydrates. Grain carbohydrates are the ones to cut back on as they can elevate your glucose levels. When I reduced my grain carbohydrates to 10% of my total diet, I lost a lot of weight, plus my vitals improved. Why do you put bad food into your body? It doesn’t take a medical degree to understand which foods are good and which are bad.

Change the Stress in Your Life

Increase your mindfulness by scheduling meditation time each day, keeping a gratitude journal, or just sit in nature and listen to the sounds for 5 minutes a day. You could even take a walk in nature which would give you exercise and peace. Let’s work at reducing the noise in our heads and return to calm. I have found that when I do these things my energy levels, clarity and creativity improved.  Lastly, get at least 7 hours of sleep a day. I usually go to bed around 10 pm and wake up at 6 am. Follow the 3 steps to aging better by watching the foods you eat, the lifestyle you choose, and how you deal with stress all play a role in your health. It is best to think of health care as a team effort between you and your doctors and therapists. Your health providers can give you guidelines, but it is up to you as to how much you comply.
