Strength training is key!
Most of us are aware of the need to work out or should I say strength train. People have a wide variety of ideas as to what the outcome will be. Some people fear that if they lift weights they will become a huge muscle bound jock. For women, they may feel it is not very feminine. Some people believe they are simply too old to strength train. Others may associate steroid use with weightlifting.
The top excuse for not strength training is lack of time and money to go to a gym, therefore they cannot build their muscle strength.
Strength Training
All of these excuses are just excuses! I think everyone would agree that strength training builds muscle strength. But did you know that strength training also builds the density of your bones? As you lift weights, books, cans of food, or just about anything else with weight on a consistent basis, you will get stronger and so will your bones. By lifting objects, the pressure on your bones will cause them to become stronger and less likely to have osteoporosis or osteopenia.
Muscle bound athletes you see in a gym get that way be spending hours each day working their muscles. The average person needs to spend 30-45 minutes a day, three days a week, to maintain their strength. On this schedule you will never become muscle bound. As for steroids, the weights do not make you use drugs. The athlete chooses to use drugs.
YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO STRENGTH TRAIN YOUR BODY! Your body is like a car, the older it gets the more maintenance you must do. Once we pass 20 years of age, we are considered a classic. A classic requires daily maintenance for it to run like it did when it was new. In fact, the older we get, the more work we need to do. Ever seen a senior citizen request help to get out of a chair? Anyone ever said to you that because your are getting older you will have more aches and pains? You have more aches and pains because you have lost strength in your muscles, not because you are older. There is no reason for anyone under the age of 100 to have weak muscles. Strength training also includes cardio vascular exercise as well, like walking briskly, bike riding or swimming.
