It is very unlike the typical massage we are used to getting in a massage salon. In a massage salon you typically get what is called a Swedish massage. These are great for relaxation, but fall short when you need a more therapeutic massage.
When you receive a deep tissue massage it can tend to be a little painful in spots. the pain is not that anything is damaged, but are actually muscles that need to release to prevent injuries in the future. When your therapist finds one of those spots, just breathe an allow your body to let go of the tight muscle. Muscles are tight due to overuse, stress, and fatigue. Our brain controls every move our muscles make. If you are stressed, your brain will tell your muscles to tighten to protect you. However until your brain tells them to let go, your muscles will continue to hold on. This will lead to spasms and cramps. It can also lead to chronic pain.
Deep tissue massage is really teamwork between you and your therapist. Your therapist is guiding you to find tight muscles then allowing you to use your brain and breath to release the muscle. If you work with your therapist, you will leave your appointment feeling your best as you will have better blood flow, nerve connectivity, and a looser body.
There are things to know before you get a deep tissue massage. let you therapist know if you are suffering from low blood pressure, blood clots, bruise easily, and any recent surgeries.
